In Alabama, like every state, a person can always choose to represent themselves in a legal matter. When it comes to fighting a traffic ticket, this may not be such a bad idea--but what about estate planning?
With the advent of the internet several websites, such as LegalZoom, offer online forms and legal documents for all those DIY Perry Masons out there. These websites claim to allow you draw up your own documents, like a will or a power of attorney, for a fraction of what it would cost to pay a lawyer. One lawyer even forwarded me an e-mail from a different legal form website, which was advertising "Do It Yourself Will Month" -- they were offering will forms at the low low price of just $9.95! (But wait . . . there's more).
Before you click that mouse, however, there are a few things you should know.
